Operation Write Home Birthday Bash 2013 with Unity Stamps

Today Operation Write Home is celebrating its birthday with Unity Stamps!  I am a big fan of Unity Stamps, so I'm super excited to be part of today's skip featuring Any Hero cards using some new Unity patriotic sets.

Today's skip starts at Operation Write Home's Stars & Stamps blog.  The full list of participants' links in today's skip are posted there.  If you need to go back and find a link, click HERE and you will get to the Stars & Stamps blog.

My first card uses a fun set called Home of the Brave (IB-525).   It comes with a butterfly and sentiment.
To make the butterfly, I first stamped it with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then wiped off the stripes and re-inked them with a Memento marker in Ladybug Red.  After stamping, the blue side was colored with another Memento marker in Danube Blue.  To make the red stripes match the blue marker better, I went over the stripes with the Memento Ladybug Red marker.  I also used a bit of white gel pen on the stars.  After cutting out  the butterfly and sentiment, I popped them up with foam tape (the "Precious") and put them on a Spellbinders Labels 22 die.   (I cut the blue background die piece down a bit on each side so it would fit better.)  Since I love stars, I used two stars embossing folders from Darice.

My next two cards are a bit simpler!
The kraft cardstock is embossed with a Cuttlebug Stars embossing folder, the Navy strip is cut with a Simon Says stars die - the negative space shows the white from an underlying piece of white cardstock. The awesome sentiment stamp is an Itty Bitty called God Bless the USA stamped onto a Spellbinders Ovals die and backed by a Spellbinders Labels 18 die.  I followed OWH sketch 112 for my layout.

My third and final card uses papers from Paper Pizzaz, OWH sketch 123, a Spellbinders Star die covered in Glossy Accents (I mounted the paper star onto some chipboard.), and a terrific Itty Bitty stamp called Courage - HERO - Strength.  I just love the slightly distressed look of it.

I really look forward to making more Any Hero cards using these (and some other!) Unity stamps from their Military/Patriotic line.   If only writing inside my cards was as easy as making them!  I do, however, manage to convey my family's appreciation for the sacrifice our Heroes make being so far from home.  I also like to wish them a safe tour and trip home.  I am currently working on adding a more personal touch by talking about the weather or some daily happening, but for now, I know that just by acknowledging their efforts and expressing our appreciation for the job they do, my cards can still be an uplifting message for our Heroes to receive.

Thanks for visiting my blog today.  I enjoy and appreciate any comments!

The next blog in today's skip is Nancy at Scrap Happens!  Nancy makes some gorgeous cards.  Enjoy the rest of the skip!

  18. I love the striped card. Actually, I like anything red, white and blue. However, I do like how you used the stripes with a simple star.

It is easy to tell that your cards are made from your heart, and that you have a great big one! I think the butterfly on the first card is wonderful!!!!!!!! I have a heart, wreath and Christmas tree with that kind of design, I just have to go put ink on them now!!!!!!

  27. This is hard. All three are different and unique. Okay, the butterfly is quite clever and looks great on the labels. Will have to try this after I get the labels. I like these bigger stars embossing folder better than the smaller one which I have. This last one is so bold and dramatic. Gotta find that paper. Thanks for sharing your talent.

  28. Wow!! All 3 cards are so good!! I really love how you did that butterfly - bright, and seems to draw attention to red, white, & blue!

  33. Your cards are wonderful!!! I love the embossed look and hope to someday have the ability to emboss paper. The star on your third card with the glossy raised look and chipboard really give depth to your card and I want to try out your technique. Of course, I now have Spellbinder envy...hmmm.

It is hard for me too, writing inside the hero cards. It is easy though to talk about the everyday, so much of what soldiers, sailors, and other armed services miss.

    Thank you for sharing!!!

  34. These are three great cards, but the second and third are my favorites because the reds and blues are so dark and rich. I also love the white stars shining through the navy banner, a technique I can try even though I don't have that particular die. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

  35. All the cards are beautiful, I really like how you used smaller embossed stars under the image and larger one on the background. Very well done!

  37. All the cards are great. The butterfly is fantastic, thanks for sharing how you did it. I'm really drawn to the last card because of the distressed look, which I love, and because it is more something that I could replicate.:)

  63. All of your cards are fantastic! I have that butterfly stamp and had thought about a more distressed look but I love what you did with it ...the bright colors are amazing. I love that star embossing folder and use it on patriotic cards too....

    ReplyDelete
  64. All three of your cards are great, but I especially like the patriotic butterfly! I also love the deeper shades of red and blue (at least they look that way on my monitor) on the third card too - slightly different than the traditional bright red, white and blue but still definitely keeping the patriotic feel.

Thank you, too, for sharing your thoughts about writing inside the AnyHero cards. It isn't always easy to write to someone you don't know. I think we just have to keep in the back of our mind that the heroes will appreciate any words of support we give.

  65. I like all these cards but particularly like the "God Bless the USA" card. The rich colors with the gold star background is really beautiful. The Hero receiving it will truly appreciate it.
